Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a kid. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to look at the trash from a home belonging to a jury member. When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was handed she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio, right after graduating from the college. In 1999, she founded her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
